A Welcome Message from the Department Head

Dear Everybody,

On behalf of Istanbul Commerce University (ICU), Electrical-Electronics Engineering (EE) Department, I would like to congratulate our prospective students after their hard work during their studies towards the university exam. It is a real privilege for us to expand our family with recently admitted students announced by Higher Education Council (HEC) rankings along with freshmen and recent graduates. I would like to take this as an opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude to the ICU officials during the promotion days under the shadow of the pandemic in rigid restrictions. Despite these stringent conditions, EE is proud to have all HEC slots reserved full again and we are looking forward to meeting you in the upcoming academic year. However, considering the situation that we all faced during the last months, official announcements about the planning of the next semester should be checked regularly to stay up-to-date.

Before proceeding further, I would like to briefly mention what EE achieved during the lockdown days and at the new normal stage. I hope these achievements would encourage new members of our family. First and foremost, EE has been granted one more time with a very challenging research and development (R&D) project with an alias “ROBOTIM,” by the Presidency of Defence Industries under the Presidency of The Republic of Turkey. The project allows EE to recruit students who are successful, talented, passionate, and focused. Hopefully, starting with Fall 2020, EE will commence the recruitment. EE proudly keeps being the flagship of the College of Engineering at ICU by getting grants from the Presidency of Defence Industries under the Presidency of The Republic of Turkey for the project alias KAŞİF; Istanbul Development Agency for the project Istanbul Digital Forensics Lab. and now for ROBOTIM.

In parallel with these, establishing such a project pipeline bears fruit and our another graduate, Özgür Alaca (after Sezer Can Tokgöz), has been accepted as a PhD. student with full scholarship at Texas A&M University at College Station, TX, USA, which is one of the top universities across the globe. We hope more graduates will be present in prestigious universities, R&D companies, and institutions with both ROBOTIM and other project proposals waiting for approval.

As EE, we take an active role in IEEE, one of the most important organizations in our field. This way, our students have already had and will always have priority access to top tier events and organizations such as global conferences; distinguished seminars, lectures, and gatherings; and meetings. Starting from 2020, we carry out a very critical mission in IEEE Turkey as well. Under Region 8, IEEE Turkey always encourages students and young professionals in the field with exclusive privileges.

For conducting Fall 2020, there are several things to be stated. First of all, the first year is a crucial time for all the students. There might be a tedious adaptation period to the lectures, assignments, and projects. Yet, you will taste the engineering experience as you make progress. EE is the place where you will be acquainted with technical and personal skills to compete with your peers. Additionally, It is an opportunity for our faculty and staff to provide training for learners to compete in the real world and succeed in their chosen career path.

Finally, it is vital for our students to note that all official announcements will always be published on the official website of the Department [http://ee.ticaret.edu.tr]. Considering the timeliness issue, students are also encouraged to join the official EE WhatsApp group via the link on the Department’s official webpage. However, the main source of information and its dissemination is still the Department website. It is the students’ responsibility to follow the announcements on the official website of Department. To be informed correctly on any issue, students should follow official announcements and contact the Department in case needed. Additionally, students should read the RULES page to make communications as effective as possible.

I wish all our new members and concurrent students to have a nice, successful, and healthy Fall 2020.

S. Yarkan,
Department Head

EE Department Head was Invited by Texas A&M University at Qatar to Give a Talk

EE Department Head was invited by Texas A&M University at Qatar to give a talk in the field of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) on September 29th, 2019. Title and abstract of the talk are given below:

Title:
WWW: World Wide Wheels—A Paradigm Shift for Transportation Systems via xG

Abstract:
Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications are two prominent platforms of a broader concept called V2X for next generation wireless networks (NGWNs) from the perspective of both transportation safety/security and green infrastructures. In case V2V and V2I communications are established, transportation will become safer by the collaborative effort of vehicles and infrastructures via collision avoidance systems, emergency warning protocols, autonomous cars, and so on. Transportation will become greener via V2V and V2I
communications as well. Carbon footprints will be reduced by routing optimizations, traffic congestion avoiding navigation, platooning, and traffic information systems. As can be inferred, NGWNs will be the ultimate enabling technology for such envisions. In this talk, V2X communications and their relationship with NGWNs will be discussed in detail. Both theoretical and practical aspects along with critical problems and proposed solutions will be provided. Future horizons will be given as well.
